Lagaan: movie review

Review of the film, 'Lagaan'

On 15th August, department of English has organised the film screening of 'Lagaan'. I have not seen the movie, because I'm absent on that day, that's why I'm not able to seen the movie. But, as per my reading of others review and the story of the movie I get the idea of whole concept of the movie.

Lagaan, released worldwide as Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, is a 2001 Indian epic sports-drama film, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, produced by Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan, and written by Gowariker and Abbas Tyrewala. Aamir Khan stars along with debutant Gracy Singh, with British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne playing supporting roles. It is a story of ordinary people set in a small village 'Champaner' in Central India during the British rule in 1893. The tale narrates the determination of the villagers to fight against injustice and opposition.

The story goes like this...There is no rain in the village since a year. The villagers who depend on rain for farming are unable to pay the lagaan to the ruler Captain Russel. On top of that they are asked to pay dugna lagaan (two taxes). Captain Russell gives an alternative to the villagers that if they defeat the British in a game of cricket, they will be exempted from tax for three consecutive years but if they loose they will have to pay three times more lagaan. It becomes a life or death situation for the villagers.

As representation of subaltern, director uses the ruler imagery. Aamir Khan as Bhuvan present the ruler India. Kachra, who is belongs to lower cast. When Bhuvan takes him in the cricket match, everyone has resist against him. So, Indiana are deeply believe in untouchability, and because of it one has to suffer a lot.

Cricket is the Metaphor of Post colonialism. In this film it also seen as the symbol of fear and freedom. All the villagers don't know how to play the cricket. For the freedom of the nation villagers can do anything. They doesn't want to pay text, and fighting against the Britishers. So, here the patriotism is very strong point, which is shown by the director.

So, the movie displays many aspects like colonialism, patriotism, untouchability. The movie is best example of freedom fighting. And resist voice against the British Empire.

Thank you....

Structuralism and Literary Criticism: Gerard Genette

Thinking activity: Structuralism and Literary Criticism ➧  Being a structuralist critic, how would you analyse literary text or TV serial or Film? You can select any image or TV serial or film or literary text or advertisement. Apply structuralist method and post your write up on your blog. Give link of that blog-post in the comment section under this blog. In literary theory , structuralism is an approach to analyzing the narrative material by examining the underlying invariant structure. For example:-  A literary critics should apply one type of pattern or structure in their writings. They don't applying something new or we can say something unique in their writings.  Like  Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
