learning experience of E. A. Poe's Stories by Dr. Jay Mehta.
On 19 to 22 September I have expert lecture on A. E. Poe's Short stories. The expertise was Dr. Jay Mehta, who has excellence in Poe's fictions. Dr. Mehta has also deep knowledge of poetry, gazal, which makes him unique. He has deep impact of Edger Allan Poe, that's why he has much interest in Poe's fictions.
Edgar Allan Poe was the Pioneer of short stories, his writing style was different from other writers. His stories deals with horror, gothic elements, suspense, and detective fictions, we can find in today's serials and movies like, crime patrol, CID, Bobby Jasoos, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, etc.
He discussed about Poe's stories as well as the psychological terms. So we can get the idea that he has wast knowledge of literature and also about theories.
On the very first day he taught about major ideas of the stories, horrible but very different kind of story The tell tale Heart, and the Black cat. In the several days we learnt about his another stories, The fall of the house of Usher, The cask of Amontillado, The Purloined Letter, and the The Gold Bug. All have different kinds of narration. Mehta sir has different style of teaching, which is very significant we never get bored, uses of poetry is the best mixture of study and learning. Ok so, let's talk about other points in detail.
#About Poe's stories...
Poe's most of the stories are thriller, scary, gothic. The tales of horror and terror, but it gives the imagination of different world which we couldn't face in our normal life. Humour is rarely found in Poe's stories. Death is the major theme of the stories and Poe as a skillful literary artist he constructs a tell, through the visuals, pictorial narration. Here, I'm discussed some more points of Poe's stories.
#Significant beginning:-
Right from the beginning we can find negative connotation, like, dull, soundless, dark. In the starting characters confessed their crimes which is very unusual. The
characters do self explanatory of their crimes. Normally the beginning is impactful which gives the idea of the story, and Poe used unusual ambience to create the horror.
#Different characters:-
In Poe's stories the characters are very different, they have split personality, dangerous mindsets, mad, but justifically rational. In The tell tale Heart, the protagonist says that 'I am not made', he has different personalities in day and in night. In 'Black cat's the narrator has same insane personality.
#An odd storyline:-
Dr. Jay Mehta told us that he introduced us with the different world, the world of Poe. Because Poe chooses the different and odd narration to make the readers scared. Most of the stories are based on the revenge
motives. Mostly I like the thriller and horror stories.
#Psychological aspects:-
We all have three principals, pleasure principle, rationality principle, and morality principle. Which we call Id, Ego, Superego. And we have a balance on our mind, we concious about whatever we we do, but some has no balance on mind. That kind of characters and found in Poe's stories. Many has psychological disorders, like OCD - Obsessive compulsive disorder in which killer has no motive to kill the person.
In the last day we have special session on poetry and I am very glad to attend that session. Jay Mehta sir has vast understanding of poetry and gazal. I like to add one stanza of poem,
તમે મન મુકીને વરસો
ઝાપટું આપણને નહીં ફાવે,
અમે હેલી ના માણસ
માવઠું આપણને નહીં ફાવે.
