Interpretation Challenge : 'Breath' by Samuel Beckett

'Breath' a shortest play by Samuel Beckett

Recently we have studied about 'Waiting for Godot', which is also written by Samuel Beckett. It is a absurd kind of play, or we can say theatre of the ansuab. It deals with theory of existentialism. His another play 'Breath' it also based on this theory.  Absurd means nothing and his play 'Breath' it has nothingness because it is just about thirty seconds, so it bit difficult to understand or interpret. The play has no characters, no plot and sense of nothingness.

#The script of the play:-

CURTAIN Up

1. Faint light on stage littered with miscellaneous rubbish. Hold about five seconds.

2. Faint brief cry and immediately inspiration and slow increase of light together reaching maximum - together in about ten seconds. Silence and hold for about five seconds.

3. Expiration and slow decrease of light together reaching minimum together (light as in 1) in about ten seconds and immediately cry as before. Silence and hold about five seconds.

CURTAIN Down

When we read the play and try to interpret, it creates confusion, but after watching the videos of the play we get the idea of hidden meaning. It throws the impact that, how a rubbish things are lying down on the floor, the imagery was very disgusting but somehow it has deep meanings. Our life is same like this video , it is full of absurdity, and we can't do anything to it.

The play has many concepts..
Nothingness,
Meaninglessness,
Absurdity, and
Existentialism

The interpretation can be form in two ways, one the brief cry is either of born child or of any person who is about to die. The waste materials which we showed in the play it is used in both the place, for birth and for death also. If we connect this play with our life it is also goes with nothingness and we keep on living without any specific purpose. Samuel Beckett was modern write so, may he connected the play with modern world.

Thank you.....

Structuralism and Literary Criticism: Gerard Genette

Thinking activity: Structuralism and Literary Criticism ➧  Being a structuralist critic, how would you analyse literary text or TV serial or Film? You can select any image or TV serial or film or literary text or advertisement. Apply structuralist method and post your write up on your blog. Give link of that blog-post in the comment section under this blog. In literary theory , structuralism is an approach to analyzing the narrative material by examining the underlying invariant structure. For example:-  A literary critics should apply one type of pattern or structure in their writings. They don't applying something new or we can say something unique in their writings.  Like  Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In both texts a girl and a boy fall in love (a "formula" with a symbolic operator between them would be "Boy + Girl") despite the fact that they belong to two groups that hate each other ("Boy's Group - Girl's Group...

T.S.Eliot : Tradition and Individual Talent

Thinking Activity on Tradition and Individual Talent 1.  How would you like to explain Eliot's concept of Tradition? Do you agree with it?                                 Yes, I'm agree with the Eliot's views. He point out the tradition as that the tradition is matter of much wider significance. It cannot be inherited, you must obtained it by  great labour. Talent has no connections with the inhabitants, we have to work hard to catch the talent.                   Being a part of tradition we have to do great labour, it involves historical sense which involves appreciation not only of the pastness of past but also it's presence. 2  What do you understand by Historical Sense?                 " The historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its pre...
