Kenneth Branagh's movie 'Hamlet' Based on Shakespeare's Play 'Hamlet'

2, September 2017

  •      How faithful is the movie to the original play? After watching the movie, have your perception about play, characters or situations changed?
According to me movie is  quite faithful to the original play, while we look at characters, situations and settings all are as much as similar to the original play. the play was written in 16th century and movie was made in 1990 so there is very much difference between play and movie. Director himself play the role of Hamlet and he make some different  changes. like "to be or not to be" scene, In the movie this scene presented in  front of mirror. conversation between ghost and Hamlet, ghost presented in very older way
  •     Do you feel ‘aesthetic delight’ while watching the movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reasons?
While watching the movie there no much aesthetic delight because of long dialogues but, while we watched on some comic scenes and friendship between Hamlet and Horatio it is very interesting part of movie.
  •    Do you feel ‘catharsis’ while or after watching movie? If yes, exactly when did it happen? If no, can you explain with reasons?

We feel catharsis at Ophelia's madness we feel pity on her,  when Hamlet goes to kill Claudius but he doesn't kill him because of   his moral dilemma. So,  we feel pity on him because he has to chance to take revenge of his father's murder.
  •        Does screening of movie help you in better understanding of the play?
Screening of movie helps us to better understanding of the play, because when we only read a play it is quite boring to understand everything but movie screening is very interesting one to better understanding.

"Books and movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different."

  •      Was there any particular scene or moment in the movie that you will cherish lifetime?
There was many scenes but, when  movie starts and camera rolls on the name of Hamlet Empire it was amazing moment that I will remember lifetime.
  •      If you are director, what changes would you like to make in the remaking of movie on Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’?
Movie was directed by Kenneth Branagh and it was great work done by him. Movie was faithful to the original play but, there is one change that I have to do, I choose Hamlet as early twenties rather than matured one.

  •    In the beginning of the movie, camera rolls over the statue of King Hamlet out side the Elsinore castle. The movie ends with the similar sequence wherein the statue of the King Hamlet is hammered down to the dust. What sort of symbolism do you read in this?

King Hamlet wants to revenge through his son prince Hamlet. so his impulse of revenge is cause of downfall, not only for his family but his whole empire becomes punished because of King Hamlets urge to revenge.

  • While studying the play through movie, which approach do you find more applicable to the play? Why? Give reasons with illustrations.
While we studying the play through movie psychological approach and formalist approach both are applicable in the play. Hamlet fight with him self 'to be or not to be'. and in formalist approach we can see trap imagery or play within the play  named 'Mousetraps', and 'seeing and knowing'

  • Which of the above mentioned approaches (in Pre-viewing task) appeals you more than other? Why? Give reasons.
In the play psychological approach  more appeals me, in the play Hamlets character indicate as misogynist. Hamlet behaves very rudely with Gertrude and Ophelia as misogynist person.
[In  Ek Villain misogyny presented through the character of Rakesh Mahadkar ( Riteish Deshmukh) ]

So, through the movie screening of play Hamlet by Kenneth Branagh helps us to better understand the whole play.

Thank you.

Structuralism and Literary Criticism: Gerard Genette

Thinking activity: Structuralism and Literary Criticism ➧  Being a structuralist critic, how would you analyse literary text or TV serial or Film? You can select any image or TV serial or film or literary text or advertisement. Apply structuralist method and post your write up on your blog. Give link of that blog-post in the comment section under this blog. In literary theory , structuralism is an approach to analyzing the narrative material by examining the underlying invariant structure. For example:-  A literary critics should apply one type of pattern or structure in their writings. They don't applying something new or we can say something unique in their writings.  Like  Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In both texts a girl and a boy fall in love (a "formula" with a symbolic operator between them would be "Boy + Girl") despite the fact that they belong to two groups that hate each other ("Boy's Group - Girl's Group...

T.S.Eliot : Tradition and Individual Talent

Thinking Activity on Tradition and Individual Talent 1.  How would you like to explain Eliot's concept of Tradition? Do you agree with it?                                 Yes, I'm agree with the Eliot's views. He point out the tradition as that the tradition is matter of much wider significance. It cannot be inherited, you must obtained it by  great labour. Talent has no connections with the inhabitants, we have to work hard to catch the talent.                   Being a part of tradition we have to do great labour, it involves historical sense which involves appreciation not only of the pastness of past but also it's presence. 2  What do you understand by Historical Sense?                 " The historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its pre...
