Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe

August 09, 2017

Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. Here I am going to discuss about these three questions:

1. the play directed by Matthew Dunster for glob theatre ends with this scene ( see the image of Lucifer ). what does it signify?

It signifies that Lucifer become more powerful because he taking away doctor faustus's soul. his wide
wings signifies his victory on God. in the end he becomes more powerful so through his wide wings he shows his power and it shows that God fails and Lucifer wins.

2. Is God present in the play? if, yes where and how? If, no why?

Yes, God is definitely present in the play, through an old man and good angle

Old man:
O gentle Faustus, leave this damned art,
This magic, that will charm thy soul to hell,
And quite bereave thee of salvation!
Though thou hast now offended like a man,
Do not persever in it like a devil:
Yet, yet thou hast an amiable soul,
If sin by custom grow not into nature;
Then, Faustus, will repentance come too late;
Then thou art banish'd from the sight of heaven:
No mortal can express the pains of hell.
It may be, this my exhortation
Seems harsh and all unpleasant: let it not;
For, gentle son, I speak it not in wrath,
Or envy of thee,<235> but in tender love,
And pity of thy future misery;
And so have hope that this my kind rebuke,
Checking thy body, may amend thy soul.
(this line was adapting to the sparknotes)

and also we can say that  there is evil angle and good angle both are present in the play.
so, definitely we can say that God is present in this play

3. What reading and interpretation can be given to this image, (see the image of Deadalus and Icarus) with reference to central theme of the play Doctor Faustus?

The myth of Deadalus and Icarus is one of the most known and fascinating Greek myths as it consist of both historical and mythical details.In this image father and son both were flying in the sky with wide wings. the father suggested to hos son that do not go too high because of his wax wings but Icarus's myth he goes to very high to meet God of Sun, and it it become downfall of Icarus. In Doctor Faustus he was also dosen't  understand knowledge of God and it became also downfall for Dr. Faustus.

Structuralism and Literary Criticism: Gerard Genette

Thinking activity: Structuralism and Literary Criticism ➧  Being a structuralist critic, how would you analyse literary text or TV serial or Film? You can select any image or TV serial or film or literary text or advertisement. Apply structuralist method and post your write up on your blog. Give link of that blog-post in the comment section under this blog. In literary theory , structuralism is an approach to analyzing the narrative material by examining the underlying invariant structure. For example:-  A literary critics should apply one type of pattern or structure in their writings. They don't applying something new or we can say something unique in their writings.  Like  Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In both texts a girl and a boy fall in love (a "formula" with a symbolic operator between them would be "Boy + Girl") despite the fact that they belong to two groups that hate each other ("Boy's Group - Girl's Group...

T.S.Eliot : Tradition and Individual Talent

Thinking Activity on Tradition and Individual Talent 1.  How would you like to explain Eliot's concept of Tradition? Do you agree with it?                                 Yes, I'm agree with the Eliot's views. He point out the tradition as that the tradition is matter of much wider significance. It cannot be inherited, you must obtained it by  great labour. Talent has no connections with the inhabitants, we have to work hard to catch the talent.                   Being a part of tradition we have to do great labour, it involves historical sense which involves appreciation not only of the pastness of past but also it's presence. 2  What do you understand by Historical Sense?                 " The historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its pre...
